Dolomite Alps
On June 26, 2009, the Dolomite Alps have been declared natural heritage
by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
Organization). The area covers approximately 135.000 hectare (over 500
square miles) and owes its membership among the world heritage to its
geological history of origin, unrivaled in the Alps, and its
extraordinary beauty and scenery. Nine mountain ranges of the Dolomites
are part of the world heritage; six of them are located in South Tyrol:
Sextener Dolomites, Fanes-Sennes-Prags, Puez-Geisler as well as
Schlern-Rosengarten with the attached Latemar and the
Bletterbachschlucht.
